Warren & Nate's Odyssey
Minutes into the epic and something in my head was already stirring: I already knew this tale, but not as scribed by Homer
Odysseus fighting his way home to Ithaca after the Trojan War is essentially a story of a guy trying to get back alive
It was a clear black night, a clear white moon
Across another ocean, Warren G is cruising through Long Beach trying to make it through the night alive
Just hit the east side of the LBC
Odysseus and Warren G are essentially heroes wandering their domains, from the mythical world of the Mediterranean 'Beyond' to 21st and Lewis in Long Beach California
Some brothas shootin' dice, so I said, "Let's do this"
Along the way both men get robbed and ambushed - Odysseus repeatedly gets waylaid by hostile forces (Cyclops, suitors, etc.) whilst Warren G gets cornered, held at gunpoint and stripped of his rings and Rolex by local thugs
Some brothas pulled some gats, so I said, "I'm stuck"
The robbery represents a violation of the local codes - jumping and robbing a man in his own neighborhood is not acceptable, in much the same way as Odysseus' wife Penelope's suitors commit the ultimate ancient Greek sin by violating xenia (the sacred laws of hospitality) by abusing their host's generosity, plotting against the bloodline, and refusing to leave her palace
I looked at the brotha and said, "Damn, what's next?"
Just as Warren G realizes he's in over his head ~They got guns to my head, I think I'm goin' down~, Nate Dogg arrives with ~16 in the clip and 1 more in the hole~ to equalize the playing field
Meanwhile, Odysseus disguises himself and recruits his loyal son Telemachus (along with divine backup from Athena) to coordinate a trap for the suitors who outnumbered them
I see my homie and some suckers all in his mix
The subsequent enforcement of justice is swift and violent: Nate Dogg steps up and mercilessly dispatches the attackers
Now they droppin' and yellin', it's a tad bit late
In Ithaca, Odysseus locks the doors of the Great Hall, strings his legendary bow, and along with his son Telemachus, systematically slaughters every single suitor who disrespected his house
I laid all them busters down, I let my gat explode
A loyal companion coming to the rescue just in time is central to both stories: Nate Dogg shows up with lethal Glockish firepower to save Warren G, much like Athena (or Telemachus) intervenes to help Odysseus at critical moments
Now I'm switchin' my mind back into freak mode
It ends with the women: After the danger is handled, Warren G and Nate Dogg link up with women for a good time
If you want skirts, sit back and observe
I just left a gang of those over there on the curb
Both stories frame the female connection as the reward after surviving the gauntlet - Odysseus's whole quest ends with order being restored to Ithaca, reclaiming his kingdom, reuniting with Penelope and asserting his rule once again
I got a car full of girls, and it's goin' real swell
The next stop is the Eastside Motel
At their core, both Nolan's epic adaptation and Warren G's 1994 West Coast hip-hop anthem tell a timeless tale: Whether it's 21st and Lewis in Long Beach or the halls of ancient Ithaca, if you disrespect another man's house and violate the rules of the neighborhood, someone is eventually going to step in and regulate
